Team KAB run to success in the London Marathon
On Sunday 22nd April, 14 runners braved the heat to take part in the 27th London Marathon to raise funds for Kent Association for the Blind. Each runner raised a minimum of £1350 to participate.
Despite the soaring temperatures, all 14 managed to complete the course in under six hours. Alison McNaught, Head of Appeals and Fundraising said "We would like to thank all our runners for their tremendous efforts, both in terms of training for and completing the marathon, and for undertaking the huge task of fundraising for KAB."
Talking Newspapers - Volunteers Needed!
The Maidstone Talking Newspaper desperately needs volunteers to help with the weekly production of the Talking Newspaper.
Volunteers are needed to assist with the recording of the master ‘Talking News’ tapes, in our production studio based at the Maidstone Sight Centre.
No previous experience in recording / production is required, as full training will be given.
If you have a few hours to spare every week, and would like to join our happy
team, then please call Pat Drewett on 01622 691357 or e-mail
her for further information.
New Sight Centre for Bromley!
At last, KAB is delighted to announce the opening of our new Bromley Sight Centre.
The Sight Centre is located at 18 Blyth Road in Bromley situated on the ground floor of a large detached Edwardian house. The facilities are accessible to wheelchair users as well as people with sight loss. The new Resource Centre will be fully equiped, where you can go to see the latest equipment to help with independent living skills, communication and mobility.
The Sight Centre will also offer facilities for meetings, from up to 20 people in our Training Room to a smaller room suitable for meetings up to 8 people. We have a fully equipped training kitchen to facilitate daily living skills. If you would like to book any facilities at the centre please contact the Team on 020 8464 8406 or email catherine.evans@bromley.gov.uk.
If you have any suggestions regarding the future use of the Centre please let us have your views.
Communications Unit
KAB is entering another phase in our efforts to keep up with new technology
in providing our Talking News Service in alternative formats. We are working
in partnership with Ravensbourne College in Bromley to establish a Podcasting
service for those service users who wish to access information in this way.
We are also exploring the possibilities for people to download at their local
libraries using MP3 players or memory sticks. Towards the end of August we
will be setting up a pilot project involving a range of service users to explore
any problems or issues before going live, hopefully, in the autumn. More news
to follow.
Brave Skydivers Leap for KAB
The
first KAB Skydiving Challenge took place on 10 June, at Headcorn Aerodrome.
10 brave supporters leapt from 12,000ft for the tandem jump, and collectively raised over £4,000.
Matt Hobbs led a skydiving team of staff and clients from Maidstone based design agency Tangerine. “It was a fantastic experience, and as soon as I had landed, I wanted to go up again! Tangerine is a great supporter of KAB’s fundraising activities, and we can’t wait to see what exhilarating challenge they will throw at us next!”
Skydiving challenges are taking place throughout the summer of 2007. For
