If you're listening at home, the guide below will help you understand the technology you can use to play KAB's Digital Kent Talking Newspapers.

SD memory cards

SD memory cards are small devices that can store large amounts of digital information. They are commonly found in digital cameras, but can also be used to store text and music. They are available in various sizes from half a gigabyte up to thirty two gigabytes. The information stored in them can be accessed using a computer, or by certain audio players such as the BWBF Concerto.

MP3 format is a digital format which allows large amounts of digital information to be compressed to around a tenth of its normal size without a significant loss of quality. This means that a lot more information can be put onto a CD or a memory stick than was previously possible.

DAISY players. DAISY is a type of digital file that has special features that make it easier to navigate. In the case of audio books, the listener can easily move through chapters, and create bookmarks. DAISY formats can be played on DAISY players, and some CD players that can play MP3 CDs. DAISY players come in both portable and desktop versions, and prices start at £220.

USB Memory stick. Like SD memory cards, a USB Memory Stick is a small device for storing large amounts of digital information, such as KAB's Digital Kent Talking Newspapers. Like tape cassettes, you can record onto them again and again. To use them, plug them into the special socket on the front of the Boombox. You can also plug them into the special socket, called a USB port, on a computer.

boombox

Boombox: This is a playback device for USB memory sticks. The audio on the memory stick should be in MP3 format. There is a large volume control, a play/pause button, a previous track button, and a next track button. You can use these to skip through the articles or music on the memory stick. If you stop the player, it will remember its place when you resume. It can be run on batteries or plugged into the mains with the supplied adaptor.

The Boombox costs just £22, and is available from Kent Association for the Blind. Please contact Marten Rayner our Digital Production Coordinator on 01622 691357 or email him at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
